Frontline public safety workers are often exposed to physically dangerous and/or psychologically stressful job conditions, but they do not receive retirement benefits commensurate with those risks. HB 4045 would create a new PERS Tier 3 category for certain public safety workers with high-risk/high-stress working conditions, including those at Oregon State Hospital, Stabilization and Crisis Unit (SACU), as well as 911 Operators and Corrections Officers, allowing them early retirement benefits. This new category would help thousands of public safety workers like 911 Operator Kayla Brenner qualify for the benefits they deserve at a time of extreme workforce shortages.
